Plenty O' Cookies / Gay Drag Queen Baker

Plenty O' Cookies / Gay Drag Queen Baker

This week the guys speak to such a kindhearted fun person, Alex Copeland aka Plenty O' Smiles. Alex is a Columbus drag queen (Plenty O' Smiles) who is known for her amazing huge smile. He took his drag talents and became a baking sensation and hosts parties in drag. Most recently appeared on Food Network Christmas Cookie Challenge 1st episode (on Hulu) only 3 years into baking cookies for a living. This episode is full of fun one liners and just some good honest talk (with Alex). We really enjoyed this interview and episode and we can't wait to have him on again (maybe we will have our own cookie challenge, in drag)

In other news, we have a new opening theme song and we decided that we are going to do seasons now. 20 episodes per season. We will have our last episode of season 1 around the week of Christmas and will be back in February. We want to bring you amazing content so this will give us a chance to book more interesting guests and it will allow those of you who haven't listened all the way to catch up. “WHATPODS”

Speaker 2:

We'll return to your scheduled programming shortly. Or we are currently experiencing technical difficulties. Welcome. Jeez. Not doing so well.

Speaker 3:

Bobby[inaudible] nonfat sugar-free to the tongue is my cousin Mike Rowe and I am going to try to limit the blocks to 10. Love it, honey. Honey, I'm just so awkward at this. God.

Speaker 2:

Hello everybody and welcome to another episode of she is not doing so well. I'm Bobby and I'm Jim. That was our new intro. I love it. I, cause you were telling me you were working on one, but I hadn't heard it. Yeah, I've been working on that something. I mean, okay, so here's the thought on it though. So people who listen to our show, they're going to hear this like cheesy, like she's not, which is cute, right? It's been cute. It's lasted. Right. But I'm thinking about the listener. I'm thinking about myself and I was thinking, you know, if I was listening to this show, I'd want to kind of know who these people are because sometimes we don't start very hot. It's like sometimes we're like, so what's going on? Hey, uh, you want to catch up? What did you do? Nothing. I didn't have thing. And then it's like, Oh, this person's not close ever again. Yeah. That's when they turn it off. Right. So I'm trying to just grab the person's attention by doing a grasshopper bull by the horns. The balls. Yeah. They don't want to grab a bull by the balls. Well that's how they start. Knuck if you buck to know that song Knuck if you buck. Oh wow. Uh, no I don't, that's a song. Oh my Atlanta friends will know what that is. It's true. It's like an Atlanta rapper, I think. Well, you wanted to get listeners attention. I think you just did. I just did knock. If you buck grab those balls like God. But this new song is like bumping. Oh, it's bumping. And so we will have the whole intro with the explosion that was just for this episode. Like, Hey, you're busting it up, busting it up. So it'll just start off with it has a little, um, ASM or was it a SMR? Oh yeah. Is that it? Let's say that it whispers at the beginning. So it's like we took Janeane anyway. Okay. So we're really excited about that. So we're making a movie. Oh no. Well not really. It's a little fun. I'm going to put on Instagram like a little fun little clip. It'll be straight to DVD. I mean, they're not putting this in the theater. You don't know. Oh, Oh. So what's been going on with you where wow. Uh, not much. No, I'm just kidding. Bullshit with you. I know. Nobody could hear that. Talked about how we lose the listeners when we don't have anything to catch up on. Wow. Let me spell the T. I did nothing. I did nothing. I'm like[inaudible] on the couch. All that. No, I went to Madison. Oh yeah, you were going on that trip. I visited my friends. Yeah, it was fun. It's a cool little city. First of all, it's like the in between two lakes and myths. Yeah. It's a fancy word. Oh my. You know the country of Panama is one, well, Madison sits in between two lakes, so you fly over it, you see bodies of water, and then in the middle is a strip of land and that's their Capitol. Like that's downtown Madison. I didn't even know that there was an airport there. Oh, well yeah. It's not direct from here. So it's a puddle jumper. It's tiny. It's teeny and tiny. It's like 14 Gates. So it's a tiny airport. But how big was your plane? Was a bigger than the one we took from Toronto. No, actually it was terrifying. The one, the one was, it's a one seat aisle. Two seats. Oh yeah, it's teen. You would not fit. Oh no, I don't even put on. They're going to be like, we're going to have to check you. You're going to to sit in the middle so we can balance the plane. You go in the luggage, sir. What does that big pad you're carrying around? It's for my fucking system. I asked it. I need an extender for the white belt. Oh, we don't have those. This plane can only hold so much. We're going to have to re seat the people to balance out the weight. Right. I mean listen, I'm glad I wasn't on that fucking plane. You would have done, I mean but you would love Madison cause it's filled with cheese curds. It's queue of cards. It was beautiful and my friends are wonderful people. That's got to tell like your shout out to them like shout out friends. I saw you had sushi and I saw you saw a she's not doing swell card or you guys. Yeah because my friend like passes them out. Yeah she's our representative. She literally passes those postcards out all over God. I love it. Yup. So exciting. And I saw it. So we were at a bar, she put one down on the bar and this is a karaoke bar that we were out on like a Saturday or Friday night in campus area. So packed. So like she put three or four down someone I watched this girl grab it, pick it up, look at it, read the whole thing. She kept it. No I'm telling you like I saw it in action. I was like wow. She spread the gospel, the gospel of Vegas. She loved town BRAC. Thank you. That's awesome though. Yeah, that's really cool. What have you been doing while I've been gone? Oh no. Well I had a hot tub party well before the hot tub party. Wow. It was a mess. Oh, it was fun. So we watched the OSU game. We went to a neighbor's house. Um, you know, we did the game like the whole like, Oh, let's watch the game. Listen, I looked hot. I was like, whatever, you're there for the food. You were there for the appetizers. That's why I go, Oh, that's why I like football. I just like was pounding alcohol and I walked in and I didn't, I didn't see the people that I normally know and I'm like, why would I go, why I don't know anybody. And then this lady comes to, he's like, hi, I'm Beth. And I was like, Oh, hi. She was so nice though. Um, but anyways, that sounds a certain way to me. She's like the mom, everybody needs love. Makes sense. Like kind of your down-home mom. Okay. That makes sense. Like, you can go in her house right away and lay down on the couch. I'm like, yeah, like you could walk into Dean and she'd be like, down on the couch and here's a blanket. I'm like, yeah, I want to meet her. Yeah. She's one of the guys, coworkers. But anyway, so we're there. There's a lot of people were socializing, getting to know some people, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Um, the party starts winding down and of course the hot tub comes up. So of course, Oh, shocker. How did I plant that seed? Like we have a hot tub. Let's go. But anyway, we got in the hot, we got, we came back here and it was a group of five of us. Five. Do I know how to do math? Yeah. Five. And we have a wig box from all the Halloweens in the past. Oh, I love the wake box, honey. So we put on a wig. Okay. The one guy, you would never even expect him to put on a way he was living his best life. He put on him this little pink dress or these, uh, straits or what are we, Oh, they're gaze. Okay. Yeah, they're gaze there. Most like, look, how easy is it for him to put on a wig? No. So groundbreaking right here. But we were laughing our asses. I was crying, laughing, and we got in the hot tub and then, but that's also becoming, I need to be careful with the hot tub because is everyone knowing about it now? Well, no, not that. I'm like talking about health and safety reasons, because when you drink like a gallon of white claw and then you get into the hot tub, things get a little like dizzy and you're like, Oh, I want to get out of the tub. Oh no. Yeah. So you just gotta be careful. But it's fun. It's really good ice breaker. This is a safety moment. This is a queer space. Come to a hot tub and no shorts allowed. Actually every time I've on the, in there it's been an underwear. Really. Everybody's like, let's just get her underwear because then nobody has boxers or briefs, boxer briefs. Ooh. One brief. And we got one pair of underwear downstairs that he left. One of them left. So what happened in the tub? Bailed. He did a Irish goodbye bro. He like came inside, took off his underwear and took an Uber home. Yeah. Cause he didn't want to like sit, his underwear was soaking so he's like, I'll just wear my pants and go home. Commando. Right. You know how it goes. So that's not tub, that's the hot tub. And so that was fun. Like it's a good time. It's definitely like an icebreaker slash like fun little introduction type thing. Okay. Um, what else? I don't know what else is going on. That was like my big moment. Well you've spent some time making the new intro. Yeah. So I've been doing a lot of like creative. Yeah. You seem like your juices are flowing. Actually somebody told me today, they're like, I think you found your thing for real. And I was like, I don't know. But like I've just been, I'm like ready to create every day. Like if you want me to produce your podcast, call me. Cause I will like, I love it. Yeah. You're like good at, you're going to edit and produce. I mean, you can do it all. I could do it. I really could. It's just I need the time. I guess that centers are like, do yours first. They're like, how about we work on that? We just do one topic at a time. I'm sorry it stopped screaming in the mic for one and I'm like, Oh, okay. No, I just, that was the feedback is that I was like, are you insulting me or yourself bitch? No, I'm just kidding. We both shout. That's why I keep adjusting your mic. You keep getting mad. Me. You're like, Mike. Mike is not loud enough. Every time you come in the studio you're like, I need you to talk just like that next week. You're like, no, no, no, no. You weren't doing that last week. Talk just like that. And I'm sitting here like every week I sit at the same distance from the mic. No, I did crank them this week a little bit more. Rank me. Can you up honey? Okay. Thank you up and spit you out before. No, Bobby's hot tub. Hot tub 2019 so we're going to do, um, w we have a good episode, shall we do, we have a really great episode. We have, we have a TV star coming on TV, fucking star and a local resident, a local resident, local drag superstar as well. Right? I mean, she was, I remember her like five years ago. I remember she did a lot more productions. We'll talk to her. She's done a lot of times. I've given her tips, many a time from the front round. Just the tip, all the tips, all the, all the whole thing. And she took them happily. I'm sure that's, you know, that's what they do. How can I say work that, but yeah, we're going to talk to her about drag. We're gonna talk to her about her business. I'm not even going to let you don't even, I mean, well, it's cookies. Oh yum. I wish that we had more time with her, like so that she would have brought us cookies, but I don't think that's happening. So I'm hoping that she gets here soon. You have your, you're like, please bring cookies. Please listen, I need this. She's like, I looked at your Instagram and you are a little beefy so I brought you some cookies. These are like the maker's doesn't. Yeah, here's the bad stock of them decorate these ones cause I know you just shove them in your mouth secretly. I want her to make, she's not doing swell pineapples. That'd be so cute. Like cookies secretly. Why don't we actually pay her to do that? I will actually like she's, I mean she's a big time now and actually I know crazy making these for free and yet, cause I said this last week, it's almost like it's art. I mean it really is. You look at him, you're like, wait for Instagram. I'm like ah. It's like you almost feel bad shoving. Just like sometimes you just admit it, you shut, you just listen. A good sugar cookie. I mean it's inhaled like there's no joke. And so I would feel bad with hers cause there's like, there's a lot of time taken in that you're like, watch me make that time disappear. So, Oh yeah. Well yeah. So we'll get way excited for that. Is there anything else that you have on your agenda today, Jim? I just want to talk to her about drag cookies in the future. All of it. The future. I like that. You know, I'm talking like the future 100 years in the future we have our blog of Manji coming out. Oh man, I sent him questions. So the biggest question I got on the Instagram, I'm little, I only asked, I was like, Hey, who has a question for Manji on the bog? It was what really is a two spirit jet. No, it's funny because I always think, no you said, I mean when I listened back I was like, Oh my God, everything was so we were going on his journey discovering it, but it never was like clearly said like we don't know if we reached is this, this and this period. So I said let us, I asked him to define it like, because his stories were great. Everything was great about, Oh yeah. It's like, I think once we hear read the answer, then we hear the stories. We were like, Oh, got it, got it. I got the full pic. So that's going to be happening. So you have more clarity. I need clarity, but he was really cool. He's so sweet. Can we just also, one thing I want to bring up because this was hilarious and I hope I want to turn it into a meme. So on Trena winter, one of our guests from our previous episode on her Instagram story, she posted video, she went to a Celine Dion show and as we know talking to her, she's not really a fan of Celine Dion. She's like, she, her friend Thomas Thomas and her do chosen family on the CBC. They have a podcast. That's what we talked about with her at our previous episode. So she somehow gets interviewed by a reporter at the sleep beyond show, like outside the stadium and the reporters. Like I am here, we have a couple of fans and Celine Dion and just like walks over to her to tryna, and Thomas ed like turns to train and train and she's like, um, I'm, I'm not actually a fan like Mike drop. It was literally the best thing I've ever heard in my life. Like I, I watched her story, I was dying. I wrote her and I was like, I wrote, I was like, this needs to be a meme. I want this to be a meme. I go, you're a fucking Savage. Hold on. I'm gonna play it right now. Okay.

Speaker 4:

Yeah. She'll be in the city until Friday. And so now we're joined with some of her fans here this evening, Thomas. And try not get evening. Thank you. I'm not actually a fan.

Speaker 2:

Oh my God. I, this is what I literally wrote her just in case we're wondering. Oh my God, you fucking Savage just gave me so much life. Yes. I'm actually not a fan in quotes. I can't, yeah, I thought that was, I mean I told her I need this turned into a meme so I can send it to people. Like I'm not actually a fan, like, Oh heard you like blah blah blah. I'm not actually a fan. Like we're going to make it. You are in a creative mode where I'm making a making it for sure in honor of tryna because that is Savage. She is a Savage and that's why we love her though and that's, I love her. I love her because you know what, that's that even even the fucking slinky on shit. She stays her values in States like she's just going to be on TV. She's getting interviewed by a reporter outside of Celine Dion, I think, concert and she says, I am not a fan. I was dead. I was in the corner. I played it probably 14 times and I was like, Oh, could not. That is, I'm so glad you brought that up. Everybody needs to check that. So good. So fun. She's so funny. Oh my God. I miss her. I feel like we're friends. We need to go back. I know. I want to go back tomorrow. I would actually, we, I mean I would let the planet planet, we'll, we'll interview Tommy. You want to go for the strip clubs but well and some of the novelties or whatever, a novelty. Mike's fuck now. Oh no, there we go. This is how you feel now. I know I want you to put your mouth right on it. I put it on there. Put your mouth on it. But yeah, so anyway, that's awesome. Thank you for bringing that up. I'm just going to still can't get over it. Um, what else we got planned? Uh, we're going to do a Thanksgiving show. Oh, I invited Carrie. I hope there's food involved. Yeah, I want to hear Carrie. I got a request to have her on again. Oh yeah. So I'm like actually her episode is like the most listened to. Yes. So I mean she's fun and she really got, I mean she, me and her click and then when you put you in the fucking now and then now and then now Jaime and, and no King Henry. Nope. Queen Henry. No queen Henry Henry hiney cause I kept saying hunty H E. N. T. Y. It's like a funny like okay, hint T or hunt. All of a sudden you typed Henry[inaudible] Henry. Yeah. And then I was like queen Henry, that's like we stand for you queen Henry, wherever you are, wherever you are. Cutting off heads. My God. Oh yeah. Oh, at medieval times our heads will be caught. We'd be dead. I'm going to be dad. We wouldn't even made it to this. Actually. We'd be dying by Naga. They died in their thirties, right? Oh yeah. You'd be long gone. I'd be old. I'm like so scary. But anyway, anyway, I'm not doing that shit again. Give me an episode with Thanksgiving with Carrie. Um, we have, um, I'm going to have Roxy Nicole on. I actually talked to her. Oh my God. Yes. And we do, we are doing the panel, so I'm going to have a questionnaire that I'm going to send out to people. Okay. I want people to ask the true like true questions. Like, I really want people to go, why do lesbians like Lowe's? Literally. Why are gay guys so like a feminine or whatever. I don't care. Ask us anything because I think it'd be a really fun, this is an RNA. Yeah. Like an honest, what is that AMA like on Reddit? Ask me anything. I am Andreatta. Oh, hi. I'm so embarrassed. You know what's that? I didn't. Oh well you said ask me anything. And then I said AMA still didn't register it. It still went right by you sailing over the head. Come and say low way. Come say hello away. Come sailaway with me anyway. Wow. Well I think it's time for our interview. I agree. So without further ado, here she is. Plenty. Oh, cookies and smiles. Cool. All right. And we're here and who are we here with? Hello, my name is Alex Copeland or plenty of smiles from plenty of cookies. Yay. Welcome to the show. Thank you for, Oh, of course. We're so excited to have you have so many questions. Jim I know has a lot of hot topics

Speaker 5:

he wants to go over. Ooh, yes they are. Okay. Well, so we just wanted to start with kind of like where we know you from and then we'll get into all the cookies in the business, in the TV show. But we were kind of wondering like we first saw you on stage and in Columbus. How did you get involved in drag and getting into these shows? Okay. So I let my friends specifically asked me one day, she was like, would you ever do drag? And I said, no, like flat out, no, I would never do it. And then I had a friend who was involved at an OUA be on, um, Ohio state's campus. Right. And she was like, Oh, there's this amateur drag show, you should do it. So I, I went to go do it my, um, junior year chicken out didn't do it. My senior year, I started dating someone, he introduced me to the drag scene and I literally did this amateur drag show and Virginia West was one of the hosts, hostesses of it. And then after that she, she booked me a few times for a cameos. And then, um, that same month Nina West adopted me as her drag daughter and it just kind of went from there. So grandma saw ya and mommy. Got ya. Yeah. Wow. Okay, cool. That's awesome. You don't even know you were going to like, I mean, this just literally, it seems like that's the story of a lot of drag Queens. Like they're like, no, no, no. Like, you know, I'm not going to do that. And then all of a sudden they get on stage and it's like a light or something. Something happens inside them. They're like, I want to perform. Now. That's something that happened to you. I mean, is it like, do you get like a rush on stage or is it, did you get nervous? Like I don't know. So I feel like every, every queen kind of gets a little nervous no matter what. Like before you go on stage you're like, Oh my gosh, what if something bad happened even though nothing, nothing ever does. Right. So I feel like when, when I was in high school, I did theater and I always said whenever I go to college I want to do community theater. Right, right. And I just consider this my community theater cause I put on a costume, put on makeup and just go out there and perform. So it just kind of like fell into my lap that it all kind of worked out. I mean, these are big productions. Like you can, well, and for our listeners, like you get tables, you like reserve them months in advance. There's like pre-sale these shows. I mean they're videos, they're well choreographed. They're hilarious. I mean, and there's multiple per year. It's not just like once a year here. It seems like it's every six weeks. Like they have like lie. So do you do shows any more? Cause I haven't seen you in a, I don't feel like in a while. I haven't been to the last two shows though, so that might be, so I basically took a year off. I think I did. I think I had, the most recent one I did was in February of this year. Oh. And, and I told her, Virginia, I promised her that I was going to do this next February. Good. So, so I'm going to get back out there. It's just been very busy. Been busy. You've been busy. Yeah. You've been very busy. Um, so do your parents know you do drag? Oh yeah. They come to the shows. Oh that's so awesome. I always wonder that. Like, I, I know, I just don't know how my parents would react really. They'd be like, Oh, but maybe they would say, I don't know. You always open with your parents, like were you able to come out early or, I came out when I was, um, it was like my sophomore year of college. Okay. And then, um, at first it was maybe a little Rocky with my parents. Like my mom was always accepting. She was always there, ready to love my dad. It took him a minute to be okay with it. But now my dad, he comes all the drag shows. He loves it. He's so supportive. And he even had a friend who their child came out and he gave them advice on how, like, how they were feeling. And for me that like, that really, really made me feel happy. It's like full circle. Like you, like he's helping others. Yeah. Yeah. That is so awesome. Yeah, that is great. Um, what would you say one of your biggest memories, I guess, uh, doing drag? Like is there something that was like Epic for you? Like any particular show stand out or beam where you're like, man, I had that moment. It's probably so many. Um, I feel like I had two favorite shows to be involved in. Okay. And one's a Nina show and one's a Virginia show. So the Virginia show would be freak show. I just thought it was so fun because everyone had a very specific character and I just had the most fun with that. And then my favorite Nina show that I did was, um, her like 15 year anniversary show. I think I was too, like I think it was called super drag a[inaudible] or something. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's amazing. Yeah. And that was like, like the number of the, I remember most of that show is you can't stop the beat, which is one of my favorite musical songs. And I just, I just had a wonderful time in that show too. That's awesome. You have that memory still. I mean that was probably how many years ago was that? I mean, 15 so it's probably three, I think. I'm thinking. Was it the one where you could do it was interactive? No, that was, I wasn't, I actually wasn't in that one, but that one was Nina's excellent adventure. She just has all this shit that I'm like, I'm trying to keep up with her. I can't even keep up with her. I mean like I see her Instagram and I'm like, wow, she's all over the world. I was chatting with her recently cause she was, she was somewhere and she took a picture of like a Redrum and with summer doing a book signing and she just texted me. I was like, Oh. And I was like, Oh tell her I said hi, like whatever. Remember me. So tell her I said I, yeah. So for people who don't know, cause we have a lot of straight girls that listen to that maybe don't know, like drag or gay stuff. So we was like, I want to know if you can explain what a drag mother is and what that means for somebody who's coming up in drag, I guess. Yeah. Um, so I actually get this question a lot because people don't know, they're a drag families, so, so a drag mother is essentially like a mentor. So I guess if, if you were in, if you were in a fraternity or sorority, it's like you're big, right. Okay. It's someone who's going to give you guidance. Um, they're gonna help get you booked. Or they're the ones who are booking you, they're gonna give you advice. If you're like, Hey, where do I get a wig? Or what of makeup should I use? Or, Hey, look at my face, tell me what I should do. Right. Like why did I should change? Um, so literally it's just kind of that mentor who kind of takes you under their wing and shows you okay. Yeah. Cause I've wondered, I'm like, I don't know where I would even start. Does anybody ever leave their mom? Oh yeah. I mean I would say, I don't like you anymore. I want another mom or mommy. I would say it's not really, it doesn't really happen in Columbus or LA. It's not that I know of. Right. But I mean people do. I mean there are fights just like in any family. Yeah, I guess that's true. And I guess like a drag family, you can leave and you don't have to ever talk to that person, right. So every time you go to the bar and they're there and you're like, Hey, are you just, you just don't go to that bar anymore. So you've been doing the productions and all that stuff. Have you, so you're a Baker. Yeah. How did you get into baking? Like when us, your whole life or, I've always loved baking and I started baking with my mom and I would always either person, she'd be like, Oh, here's the bowl of all the ingredients. You get to stir that. That was always me. Every single Christmas, that's all. That's what I did. Um, but I was working at a small boutique in the short North, which is like the arts district. And, um, I was like, I really don't, I really hate having to request off time to do drag to do the things that I want. So I want to work for myself. And I said, well, what do I love to do that I could, I could make into a business? And I remembered these cookies that I saw, like while I was at OSU and I was like, you know what, I'm going to show, I'm going to teach myself how to decorate cookies. And I literally went home and I bought this stuff and I got on YouTube and taught myself how to decorate cookies. I'm wait, what if they could see me right now? I'm like my hands when you see these cookies on Instagram, it's like I've been, I cleaned it up. Like I don't want to eat them. Like I've never had them. We're going to, we were talking about that earlier, like we really were going to order some from you, but like I usually want to have a sugar cookie. They're beautiful. I'll say just like, I'm like going at it, but like these are going to be like, how did you teach yourself? How I don't even, so, um, so the way I did it is like on, on YouTube, they have like step-by-step tutorials on how to do it right. Well, obviously it always looks a lot easier than when it's done. So I messed up quite a few cookies by, I ha, but one of my really good friends, um, his name is Michael Fallon. He has a farm market. It's called BMVs farm market. Do you know, do you know how maybe, I don't know. So he actually does the lights for the big shows. Ah, so you don't know it but you saw him? Oh yeah. Yup. Um, so he has this farm market and he saw what I was doing. He liked it. And every week I would make him like two dozen cookies. So it, it enabled me to, to practice every single week and then I could take photos and kind of advertise what I was doing. And that's a big part of how I got started. I mean, it seems like it's picked up pretty quickly. I mean, all things considered. I mean, what, you started this, how many? I mean two, three years. I mean, I think I started, um, Oh my gosh, it's so hot. It's so hard to think of it like when I started, but I think I started every four years in April. But that's kind of a long time, an hour, like on the food network. I don't know if we've told our listeners that yet. Yeah. How did you get, did you get contacted by like what happens? How do you, how does this come about? I was, I remember I was decorating cookies at home and I got a phone call from someone in LA and it was a producer and they were like, Hey, we want you to apply for this show. And they S and apparently another cookie decorator had referred me. Oh my God. So, so then they were like, well we need the application tonight because we're going through everything and like, like we have to do it really fast. So I'm like, Oh, I, it was like, it was low tonight. Tonight. Yeah, exactly. And I think it was close. It was close to Valentine's day cause I remember thinking, Oh like, Oh yeah, you know, I've got a lot of time for my busiest time, but nobody needs cookies on Valentine's day. Right. So, um, so I did the application and turned it in and then a couple of Skype interviews later, I got the call that I was going to be on the show. It was, it was so crazy. Oh my, just like that. I mean, I don't use word fate actually. I feel like that's just like, it was meant to be at this point. Like that's amazing. That, and look at all that hard work. Like you said, I gave two dozen cookies every week and I'd take pictures and you start your building, you're like, that's kinda what I'm doing with the podcast. I guess I can kinda relate in that sense. Like you've just got to keep going and you're, you keep it ongoing, has gotten you an opportunity to be on TV, which is amazing. I mean crazy. I mean, that is, so what's the name of the show so people could see it? So the name of the show is food networks, Christmas cookie challenge. Okay. And I believe this is season three. Okay. Um, and we were the first episode to air this season, so it was really exciting. And it's on Hulu. I guess, cause I'm gonna watch it after that. I'm admitting I haven't watched yet, but I'm excited to. I've heard things, I've read things I've watched bootleg, so I'm going to go on Hulu. I have Hulu. Oh, Oh yeah, like you too. Yeah. It's not okay. I'm gonna watch it too. Um, so when you, when you get the call, you have to go like then do an audition or is it just like you're on the show? Like Skype interviews or, so, so I did the Skype interviews before I found out. Right. So I had I think three Skype interviews with like five different producers. And yeah, it was like this whole process and every and every time I had to like do other things and I'm like, and it was in the middle of Virginia show, like the, uh, the last show I was then wrong. So, so I was doing my cookie orders around Valentine's day. We were getting ready to start the show, and then I had to do all these extra things. And then after the final Skype interview, they were like, well the next part is we're going to choose who's going to be on it. Well like two weeks went by and I'm like, I didn't make it. They're just not going to contact me. I didn't make it. Yeah. So it was opening night at Virginia Shao I'm upstairs painting my face and I got a call from California and I run downstairs to go outside to the patio so I can hear them. Right, right. And they tell me, and I'm just like, my parents were coming that night so my parents were, were at my place and they were coming to the show. So I get this phone call and I'm, I'm like, okay Alex, you need to keep it together cause I can't tell anyone. Right. So like I'm sworn to secrecy. I can't, Oh I didn't even know. Oh be like, Oh cause it's[inaudible] they're like, you're off to you're off. Right? Yeah. Yeah. So I'm like sworn to secrecy till it like, Oh, until they told me. So like, so like two weeks before the show aired, that's when I could tell people I couldn't tell anyone all year long. Oh God, that would be hell. It was how I was like, all I want to do is scream it from the rooftops. Right. This show you're surrounded by your family, your drag family, and your family. And then they're like, why'd you run down the stairs? Like a crazy person? And you're like, Oh, I just[inaudible]. At that point it's like, Oh yeah. So, so the tricky part was I couldn't do the last weekend of Virginia show because they were flying me out on my birthday. Fun fact on my birthday I flew to LA. That's when we were doing the show. So hot. Yeah, it was real. I was like, Oh good. This is a great birthday again. I'm going to LA. Okay. Yeah. So I had to tell Virginia, Oh Hey, something came up. I can't do it the last weekend of shows. And then everyone was asking me questions that I can't answer, so I had to come up with something. So yeah, it was like this whole thing. Did you break your leg to the know? That's what I was going to say. As Nina West broke her leg while filming drag race. I remember that. Cause I have a shirt that says, yeah, I know. And I was like, listen, that girl does stop ms pride. So there's something going on. Yeah, but that is, I cannot believe you. So you go out there and then they just started film. Like how do you prepare for filming? Do you get practice or are they just like, no, we're going to film here you go. No. Okay. So essentially you walk into this kitchen, right? So I mean we, we had like interviews and things before that, but you walk into their kitchen where you're going to bake and they show you around, here's all this stuff. And then they're like three, two, one, you're going to bake. Um, wait, what? Yeah. So imagine going into someone else's kitchen and they're like, okay, make me something to eat. You have an hour and you're going to be, um, you're me graded on TV. Well, no, I mean, no wonder every scrambling cause they really don't know where anything really is. Luckily all the stations basically have like all of your normal ingredients. Okay, okay. But everything else, if you need something that's not there, yeah, you got to run for it and you got to look. So you walk onset, they're like here's everything and get go. And then you do the, you do the whole decorating thing. Then what they do, they're just, they stop it and say, okay now we're gonna have judges judge it or does it continuously run? Like how does that work? Is it like they stop and they have to like set everything up. But I mean it's essentially how you see it. It's like we do the challenge. They, they judge it. People go home, do the next challenge. They judge it. People go home. Okay. Winners. Crown. Yeah. That is, I just can't, I'm, my mind is blown about just everything. Cause I don't know anything about like LA or TV or anything like that. I'm like, I'm like God, Hollywood. Do they put you up in a place too? Is that allowed to be asked? Like we were, we weren't. Oh yeah. So they like fly you out, put you in a hotel. Did you have to stay in, did you do two days of filming or just three, three days? Did you have to stay in the hotel when like, or could you go out? Uh, we could go out. We just, I mean, we even have time[inaudible] honestly, I like we had time, but I was so, I was so tired and it was a, is it like a four hour time difference or some things. I was like, you know what, mom was going to get some sleep and just, you've got to look good on TV too. I mean, we gotta help my, yeah. So I, I just kind of like relax. You're the only one in drag on the show, right? Well, I wasn't in drag. Oh, you weren't? No, no. Oh, so these pro, Oh, I've seen some promo. Okay. Pickup that I took are basically just like business promo. That's okay. That's for your business. Okay. But yeah, I mean they do have photos of me in drag on there, but I did not do it all on drag. I mean I would have, Oh I know you ready? Oh, you would have been ready that, but I would have to get up two hours earlier to get your, like how long did it take you to get ready? I mean I guess I assumed two hours, but I don't even, I can probably like shower, shave outfit on out the door and like an hour and 20 minutes. Okay. That's a lot of time. Like I just am like gotta go. But some, some Queens they take an hour just to paint their face or more. Oh my God, I take 30 minutes, like 30 minutes. I can use that. A skill that you were taught by your mom or is that something that you just picked up along the way? Like, Oh, I can just do this real quick. I mean if you look at pictures of when I first started drag to where I am now, like it just takes time. Right. And then after a while it's kind of like muscle memory. You just like, Oh yeah, that is so neat. So has your life changed since being on TV? I mean like what has changed for you? Anything? Um, I mean I've been a lot busier. Like I've gotten like tons of emails, lots of support from everyone and that's wonderful. Um, I actually went, I was at Disney world last week and I had someone come up and they recognized me. Stop it. Yeah. Okay. So that was like, like my five minutes of fame. I was like, that made it right by strangers, that Disney world, that is, there's a lot of people there. Yeah. So that's like out of a crowd. Boom. New. Okay. Yeah. That's great. That is so cool. That's gotta be like a weird feeling to like, Oh shit. You've seen me before? Like, I don't know. You're not like, who are you imagine being like somebody, I mean, super famous. You can even walk outside. Like that'd be bizarre. But even just one person though, it's like, Oh, thanks. Like I'd be excited. Yeah. I was excited, but I was like with my friends. So I was kind of like embarrassed. Right. And I'm like, Oh gosh, like, like let's just talk about something else. Did they give you a hard time where they're like, Oh no, they were super supportive. They super wonderful. That's awesome. So yeah, it was really awesome. That is so cool. That is really cool. Um, so what do you, what's the future hold for you? I have so many goals and being a one person business is a lot of work, so it's really difficult to have all of these ideas and literally like not enough time to do everything. Cause I also, I also work at a bank, so I work part time at a bank. Okay. Um, so yeah, I, I have a lot of goals. They're written down. You need more time, more time and more time. Yeah. I mean I feel like it's just gonna be a process with you. Like, I mean you, your journey happened so quickly. I feel like you just have good things come in. I really do. I your motive, you have like the personality, your mode. I can tell you're motivated, like what's the next call that's coming? Yeah. Somebody else could call you now and be like, okay, now we want you on ABC's dancing with the stars. Oh my, you know why if they, you know, I'll do it. Right. It would be all over. No, I mean, Oh, well I think you had a question. Oh yeah. Asking, I was going to ask you like random questions, knowledge, questions. What is your biggest fear? Ooh, yes. Fear. So like are these like, like, Hey, I'm afraid of Heights or what's the thing that makes you those minds? Like mine's death. Okay. Which is pretty, if anyone's missed it, Bobby's afraid of every episode. I have to say it. So that's at least one time. Every episode you have to like fly that. I do. And it's like kind of embarrassing at this point. I'm like, Oh, death. And I'm like, Oh fuck. I said it again. Not everyone knows. Right. So everything that's out. Yeah. Um, so I'm really afraid of spiders. Um, spiders Heights. Um, Heights. Yeah, I hate Heights. It's something that's probably like more deep is like failing. So like in any business you have slow times and immediate, like I was talking to a friend about it today and it's like if you have a slow month, you're like, Oh my gosh, what am I doing wrong? Like why? Like why is this not working? But then you realize that you're allowed to have, so mine's, that's okay. So it's, it's that thought in the back of your head like, Oh my gosh, what if this does go bad? You know? Right. Cause that is, I mean that's a big risk when you do start a company. That's probably the reason why I have people don't start them is because they're like, I mean you have to really put yourself out there and hope that it acts up and stays consistent. So, so I'm sure the holidays are really busy. Right? I mean is that like absolutely the busiest time? Yeah. Kim people like how do people, how can people place an order or like are you taking orders right now or are you out or, yeah, so typically it just depends on, on my work schedule and then how many orders I have per week. Whether I'm still taking them or kind of turning people away, which sucks. But I mean you, yeah. Yeah. So you can do orders on my website, which is plenty of cookies.com we'll link it and uh, there's like an order form and that's for like cookie decorating parties and for custom order we're going to do that. That would be so fun. That would be fun. Yeah. We'll talk to you after I hear about your schedule so we can do that. Yeah. I basically for cookie decorating parties, I'm pretty much booked. I'm starting in 2020 now, which, which I believe, I'm sure it is awesome. It's crazy to think that like I have some people booking like cookie orders in October of next year. That is so awesome. Yeah, it's, it's wonderful. Do you ever just like pinch yourself? Like what the hell am I doing? I mean, because like I really like your approach. Like what do I like doing? Yeah. And what can I do every day? Focus on that. Do you ever get annoyed? Like I don't want to cook these. I mean it's like a job, right? I mean there's something that like you just are fully, I could do this all day. Yeah. Sometimes you do while I'm at my real job. So, so sometimes I don't want to do it right. Sometimes there's always something better that you can be doing cause it is cause it cause it is work. Right, right. But I do love to bake so, so no matter what, I try to schedule myself so I don't get burnt out. And, and that's always in the back of my mind because when it becomes just work, I won't enjoy it anymore. And then I'm back to square one where I was when I was working at a small boutique like, Oh I have to, I have to do this job. I don't want to, but it's paying my bills, whatever. So I always want it to be fun and I want to love it. And that's, that's good life advice. It really is. Um, I was going to ask you, or what would you say to some like a child, let's say like a 10 year old kid who was maybe in the closet and sees you on the show and what would you say to somebody who looks at you as a role model? Oh wow. Some advice like, I dunno cause there are probably kids out there watching who there are. Huh. I know that's, that's the one on the spot. Yeah. That one really is. Um Hmm. That's a really, I know. I feel like there are like a lot of things that I would want to say. I'm not going to say very eloquently. No, that's fine. It's okay. But I feel like I would want to let them know that there are, there are people out there, no matter why, even even if maybe your family isn't accepting, um, or if you think they aren't like and also come out on your own time. I'm going to say that first. Like, like I know a lot of people get forced out or, or other people to tell them, tell them to come out, come out on your own time, be that's really important and it should be on, it should be on your terms. Right? But then after that happens, whether your family is not supportive, there are people out there if you think they're not, and they surprisingly are embrace that. Um, just know that there, like there is a support system out there that's more than just your family. And that's like that, that's important to everyone because I mean they're, so there's, um, I think called like your chosen family, which, which gave you real are like gay people know about, right? Oh yeah. So a lot of, a lot of gay people do not have as a part of family. So when you come out and you meet all these other people who have gone through the same experience you have, you get to choose your family members and they become your family. So, so that, so that's like what I guess I would tell people that was

Speaker 2:

not, that was beautiful. You just said that. Perfect. I love it. Okay. Chosen family though. He said, Oh, you want me to bring in, bring it up. So actually we interviewed this um, person trying to win tour in Montreal like a month ago and it hurt. She has a podcast up there and it's called chosen family. Ah. It's like, yeah. So this is like, wow. Was our intro of this episode. We did. We even brought and we brought it up. And so you're saying you said it and I was like, Oh wow. Like, Hey, this isn't a bow right now. All right, well we really appreciate you coming on. Do you want to like give your Instagram handle or, I mean, sure. Um, so my business Instagram handle is plenty. Oh, cookies. And then, I mean I have three Instagrams. I'm, I got three people and essentially it's a lot different personalities, honestly. So there's plenty, Oh, cookies, no spaces, no apostrophes, just plenty of cookies, plenty. Oh smiles. And then Alex T. Copeland. Awesome. And then your website is plenty of cookies.com and we will link all these on this episode. We've got to link them. Thank you so much for coming on and we really appreciate it. Yeah, thank you. Thank you. Thanks. I mean, I, I love Alex. I do too. I wasn't expecting that. I wasn't either. I honestly was not. I was like, I don't know. Like she's so sweet and just like, he's famous. Yeah. She, he, I don't know what to say when you're recognized at Disney. Like, um, yeah, that's famous. Like if a random person walking around, I know that, I know that you want this, Bobby. I know you want to be recognized. I don't. Oh, okay. No, no, no, no. Don't be like, don't talk to me. Don't be jealous. Yeah. That would be me. I'm like, I recognize you from a podcast by, you're like, no, Nope. Wrong guy. Wrong, fatty. Can't pay me. They're like, well, there's not really a foot five. Like guys just walking around. Oh my God. We saw some guy's eyes when we figured it was you and jam. So saw those eyes as smokey eyes. Smokey eyes. We need to get plenty to give you a smokey eye, honey. Oh, I would accept it. She was talking about doing like a party here. I need a drag mom, so I'm ready. Oh my God. She can meet her mom. Is she old enough to be your mom? She did. No, she looks way too young to be my mom. But you look like you're her mom, honey. I'll go, go grandma. Move over. Virginia. I'm taking over your, the great grandmother. Oh yeah, I am at, I am offended. Whatever. Um, so I mean, I don't really know what else to say at this point we ever, we never do. And usually there's some that comes up and I'm like, Oh my God. Yeah. And then it's like 45 minutes later. Um, yeah. I mean it's just, we're getting into the holiday spirit.[inaudible] spirit. You're putting up your holiday tree. I mean, I feel like that's what I, what I meant to say is the holiday spirit is around the corner. Like you don't have your spirit yet, but it's coming. So you better get ready because then what's going to happen is Thanksgiving going to hit. Okay. And then three weeks later it'll be Christmas. Wow. I think something else hit as usual at the end. I'm always like, well, I'm so sorry. Sorry. Not sorry. I'm not though. Actually the holiday spirit hit him hard. Yeah, that's what, it's not around the corner at just telling Henry, honey, queen Henry got hit. Queen Henry got hit and I lost her head. Queen Henry got hit by a hungry hippo. Wasn't there? Something like that? I don't think so. How many hippos did no, no, get. Okay. Anyway, I'm just reliving my childhood or something. I don't even know. It's horrifying. Um, well, you know where to find this on Instagram. Uh, we're going to have like movies and all kinds of fun stuff or posting about patron. I mean, not now. Jam. Okay. Oh my God. That laugh and tell some are shit man this up. But yeah, so we're going to have some fun stuff, but we might be taking a little holiday break. We need a holiday. We're going to have a holiday break at some point here in the next couple of weeks and we'll come back to talk in the new year. Um, but we do have a few more episodes at least. I don't know. I guess I'm gonna start doing seasons maybe. Yeah, we should do, see man, I don't want to have like a long time off but like, like how do I get rid of jam? So season one was gem. Season two is a new bud. I feel like it's the opposite. You're like, so is that season one, is it done or am I done here? Like what? I'm like, no, you're not going anywhere. We gotta record this isn't just starts tomorrow. Oh my God. Well weeks, seasons. I like seasons too because then we can come in like, okay, so say we say the last episode will be a Christmas episode. Like a fun funky one. Okay. After that we come back like maybe the second week in January we come back hard, hard, hard, and we get to, we book our stuff, we edit our stuff, but then we'll be back on track. I mean we can still do like our intros live, but I want to get our interviews out of the way booked. Yeah. Cause that's, it's easy for you to come over. I mean an hour is easy honey. Honey. My life is easy, easy peasy. Beautiful buttercup. A girl. But this is going South fast. It started. So I just made my like trailer trash pasta downstairs. I had, I just watched you stuff your face with Alfredo on like white socio noodles. I don't even know. I got those. I don't know where I got those. Oh honey, I don't know. I just saw you shovel it in. You had more dressing than salad. Well I had three different ranches and blue cheese. It was actually really good. Sorry I said it will blue cheese is ranch with of cheese in it. So yeah. Yeah. John junkie. Uh, so yeah, we'll book. So we'll be booked in busy. We'll have season two, season two onward and upward and upward. It doesn't mean like, yeah cause it's not gonna be the same cause I mean we'll do like season mine and it's like April to June and then season two starts April the next now. Oh no, no. Do you seem like a couple of weeks to regather our thoughts? Maybe, you know, I'll do during those times we can do like a best of, or I can do like our first, I'll maybe I'll drop for Christmas as a Christmas present. Our first ever recording that we ever did. Oh my God. Yeah, I could totally do that. That's easy. I need to re listen to that. I know. Me too. Well we've got to screen it. Yeah I think it was called myself Rob at that point. Cause I was scared at first and then we couldn't decide your name. I think we were calling you James. She did to Jim and then James and then Jimmy. I don't even just go with gem like in real life. Yeah. Jim, Jim, Bob, Jim and Bob JAMA and Bob. That's any better ring to it. Oh cause your name's first. Okay, well I'll be sitting over there and season two and you'll be over here and see Sunday. You're like bitch, I'm taking the captain's chair. This is a big and tall chair so it's wide. I was wondering. Yeah, cause you have the chair that you're sitting in is the regular version of this chair and it still swallows me. Whole swallows my hole to me hole. Wow. That'll be on the next season to clip the season to reel. We've got to end this. Yeah, we do. This has been another episode of she's not doing so well. I'm Bobby and I'm Jim.
